A PIWIS alternative for owners and independent workshops
PIWIS is Porsche's dealer tester. STEUER14 is independent Porsche diagnostic software that does the same kind of work — fault memory, live values, coding and programming on the cars it supports — on a Mac or Windows laptop with a standard ENET cable. Here is an honest comparison, including what it doesn't do.

| STEUER14 | PIWIS tester | Generic OBD scanner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Owners and independent workshops | Porsche Centres and registered workshops | Anyone |
| What you need | Mac or Windows laptop and a standard ENET cable | A dedicated Windows tester and VCI | An OBD dongle or handheld |
| Cost to start | €0 — fault memory and the Taycan's battery module are free | Tester hardware, VCI and a paid licence | The price of the tool |
| Your own car | €249 once for two cars, unlocked for good | A recurring licence | — |
| Software update on one car | €49 per car for 7 days (Taycan, 911, Panamera, Cayenne) | Part of the full licence | Generally not available |
| Retrofits | Ready-made recipes: pick the retrofit, the coding follows | Vehicle-order edits by hand | Depends on the tool |
| Runs on a Mac | Yes, macOS and Windows | No, a Windows tester | Depends on the tool |
Comparison with the PIWIS Tester as offered to workshops in September 2026, on the platforms STEUER14 supports; exact functions depend on the vehicle and the control unit. STEUER14 prices plus 5% card fee.
What STEUER14 does like the dealer tester
On the Taycan, STEUER14 covers fault memory with freeze frames, live values with recording, actuator tests, the high-voltage battery, manual and automatic coding, manual and automatic programming, and guided fault finding — plus the integration test (workshop plan), the vehicle order with its PR numbers, a network topology view, maintenance procedures, service interval reset and dyno mode. The details are on Taycan diagnostics and Features.
The depth differs by platform:
| Platform | What STEUER14 does |
|---|---|
| Taycan (9J1, 2020–2024) | The full set: diagnostics, live values, coding, programming, charging and the high-voltage battery |
| Panamera (971, 972), Cayenne (9YA) | Diagnostics with decoded freeze frames, live values, actuator tests, maintenance procedures and dyno mode, manual and automatic coding, manual and automatic programming, vehicle order and guided fault finding. No high-voltage battery or Charging page |
| 911 (992) | The same as the Panamera and Cayenne, without dyno mode; freeze-frame data is shown raw, not decoded |
| Macan Electric, Cayenne Electric | In testing: fault memory, live values, actuator tests and manual coding (most control units need an SFD2 unlock first). No automatic coding, programming or maintenance procedures yet |
What STEUER14 does not do
- The electric Macan and Cayenne are in testing: no automatic coding, programming or maintenance procedures there yet. The high-voltage battery and Charging pages are Taycan-only, and the 911 (992) has no dyno mode and shows freeze frames undecoded.
- It covers the platforms in the table above. Other Porsche models and older generations are not supported.
- SFD2 unlock: STEUER14 reads the challenge and writes the signed answer, but the signing happens online through an authorised signing service, and you need a valid signing entitlement. It is in the workshop plan. Component protection cannot be written yet. On the Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric most control units require SFD2 before coding.
- It doesn't replace the manufacturer's repair information: check every repair against it.
- It needs an internet connection to sign in and to start work on a car.
- It is beta software (version 0.9.x), and all sales are final — the free functions are there so you can check it on your own car first.
- Macs need Apple silicon. The workshop plan runs on one computer at a time, with three device changes a year.
Built for owners and independent workshops

Independent workshops
Everyone starts free: fault memory on every control unit and the Taycan's high-voltage battery report. The licence covers vehicles you own or that their owner has asked you to work on. Prices plus 5% card fee — see Pricing.
STEUER14 is an independent product of CT14 Garage, built in a working supercar workshop, and is not affiliated with, authorised or endorsed by Porsche AG. PIWIS and Porsche are trademarks of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG and are used here only to describe.
PIWIS alternative: questions, answered
Does STEUER14 need PIWIS hardware or a dealer login?
No. It is independent software that runs on your Mac or Windows laptop with a standard ENET cable — no PIWIS tester, no VCI, no manufacturer subscription and no dealer account.
Can STEUER14 do everything PIWIS does?
No. On the Taycan, 911 (992), Panamera and Cayenne it covers the main workshop functions listed above, programming included; the high-voltage battery and Charging pages are Taycan-only. The electric Macan and Cayenne are in testing, with fault memory, live values, actuator tests and manual coding.
Is it legal to use?
Reading faults, live values and the battery is ordinary diagnostics. Coding and programming change the car: whether a change is allowed where the car is driven depends on local rules and is your responsibility, as with any tester. Our 12 V battery guide covers how to do it safely.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. Fault memory on every control unit, actuator tests without the security unlock and the Taycan's high-voltage battery module are free, with no card. As all sales are final, try it on your car first.
Try it on your own Porsche, free.
